Compensation Professional — check wage rates and design pay ranges (2026-09-29).

Compensation Professional is a professional site I built for people who work in compensation. The material first sat beside people-analytics work, and that placement kept making the structure feel wrong. PeopleAnalyst is for people analysts. Compensation has its own methods, sources, decisions, and consequences, so it needed a home shaped around the people responsible for pay.

That may sound like a small organizational annoyance. Small annoyances are often evidence that the structure is wrong. Once the compensation material had its own home, the purpose became clearer: give practitioners practical guides, serious reading, sourced answers, and a direct route to useful tools without making them hunt through a broader analytics site.

I care about the reasoning behind pay decisions. A practitioner should be able to understand a method, inspect its sources, and explain the decision to another person. I built Compensation Professional to support that kind of work and to become a place people can keep returning to as their responsibility and judgment grow.

Who it is for

Compensation Professional is for compensation analysts, total-rewards practitioners, consultants, heads of compensation, and people preparing to enter the field. It serves readers who need practical guidance on pay structures and job levels, book profiles for deeper study, clear answers they can explain to others, and pointers to relevant working tools.

The problem

Compensation work is often learned while doing the job, even though mistakes can be expensive and easy to prove. The material available to practitioners tends to split between vendor content aimed at selling a benchmark and academic work that is difficult to apply to a live pay decision. That leaves analysts and leaders to assemble a method on their own, then defend choices about structures, levels, and pay differences inside the organization. They need practical, sourced guidance that helps them make the decision and explain why it holds up.

What I built

Compensation Professional is a professional site for people who work in compensation. It brings practical guides, compensation book profiles, answers, the launch list for the Dollars & Sense letter, and links to specialist tools into one place. Readers can start with a pay question, learn a method in a guide, follow its references into the library, and move to the relevant application when the work calls for a tool. Reading on the site is free. Guides are purchased through bicycle.guide, the shared guide shop, at prices from $5 to $49. The current minimum-wage checker is an interim tool and will move to GeoFrame. The publishing design keeps guidance, sources, and professional reading together while specialist applications maintain the data behind their tools.

What is new in it

  • Compensation is treated as a profession to be learned over a career. Practical guidance, deeper reading, answers, and tool referrals are arranged around the work practitioners do.
  • Advice starts from a demanding premise: a pay difference needs a reason tied to the work or the organization's results. That gives practitioners a concrete standard for reviewing and communicating decisions.
  • Guides show the references behind their methods, while book profiles let readers inspect the thinking in greater depth. Practical advice remains usable at the desk and open to scrutiny by a technical peer.
  • Reading stays free on Compensation Professional, while guide purchases use bicycle.guide, the shared guide shop. This gives readers an open learning path and buyers one place for paid guides.

Where it stands

The aim is for compensation professionals to have one place where they can learn the craft, make pay decisions from a sound method, and explain those decisions clearly throughout a career. The site is live with guides, compensation book profiles, answers, the Dollars & Sense launch list, and referrals to working tools. That foundation is built to become a lasting professional reference.
